PSYCHOLOGY. JOY of DANCING
Every night women and men are gathering at Milongas to talk, to meet each other, to smile and maybe feel happier… Their eyes are sad or shine, their hearts are hurt or inspired, and their minds need some challenge or relaxation…
Many people love Tango, because they can grow into it. They all come with the different purposes and reasons. Most of them keep dancing because on the dance floor they can release their tension and anxiety, enjoy the music, meet some challenge or create a new dance. For many of them it is important that dancing keeps them feel good, they can forget every day problems, and just relax by dancing. Others come with the hope to escape the loneliness, meet somebody and communicate; because they like to feel somebody next to their heart, somebody who makes them feel good, at least for a moment…
People who got taste of Tango will never stop dancing this beautiful dance. Others found in Tango community their friends and only family.
Thank you for some who are so purely devoted to that dance and who lives inside it, and keeps this World of Tango so beautiful.
Tango has many attractive parts (creativity, beautiful steps, music, and exercise of the mind) which hook people onto it. With this in mind, we could look and understand what else inside tango embrace, what kind of psychology was running tango into the life.
In the 19 century Tango was born in the slums and brothels. It was born as a result of lonely immigrants; men were trying to find some comfort in the company of a woman. It was a way of escaping the loneliness. It was an illusion of love for a moment. It was a way of walk with a woman and music.
At the beginning, from immigrant’s hearts some deep nostalgic melancholy came to tango music. There were some songs with very melodramatic words. It could be about a lover who has left, some unhappy situations, or life without meaning or joy.
Some lonely people and some dysfunctional couples still come to dance tango in their own time to get some illusion of love, in order to feel at least for a moment something special that they don't have in their real lives. This is another side of Tango that keeps some people at Milonga. An old story of those who tried to buy any kind of illusions... Tango was a way of being drunk or drugged by its mysterious charm, and in a way to forget for a moment the reality. It is a sad, hidden truth about what people share and have in common when they dance it. Also, people were fighting with each other because of it... It still stays this way for some of them.
However, it could be a way of a therapy, a better way of thinking. It could be a way of releasing some negative energy and creating a new fresh stream to live with.
Tango movements have special energy in every one of them. This energy varies from step to step. Such energy depends on the music and on the personality of the dancer, the designer of that dance.
If a man grew up in a very controlling or manipulative childhood, he acquired too much feminine energy. His tango is weak. He does not have any energy in the steps. He does not make an effort to do energetic steps, and he does not know when and how to do that. His authentic initiative was suppressed in his childhood. Then, the women's independence movement of the 1960's helped to kill that energy and initiatives of men, as well.
This is why a man mostly unconsciously follows a woman's strong personality in his life and tango. They have fear inside “not to be wrong again,” not to be scolded, or did not get an approval from his woman. They try so hard to be polite, agreeable and please women. However, it brings them look of a cooked potato on the dance floor.
Some women on the dance floor take a man's space and energy, and paralyze his will to create anything. She takes his desire to create, freedom to dance or improvise. Nevertheless, she probably does not realize it, and tries to make up a dance for a man, by at least doing some adorns.
When a woman has too much male energy, and too many disappointments and frustrations in her life, she expresses it through strong dancing.
Nevertheless, all women still desire and dream to dance with a strong leader, about somebody who would hug them and strongly take to somewhere to a beautiful happy place. Maybe, at least, in this dance...
In both cases, it is not a good tango. Women and men need to LEARN how to balance their "lack of" or "too much" male energy. Then their tango will improve. Also, it will help them to live a more harmonious and happy life.
Ladies! Let men lead you. Don't talk to him while learning the dance, don't try to "help" or teach him. Let them just BE with you there for a moment. You should not assume that you "know," and don't anticipate the steps. One day you might dance with a very advanced leader, and then you could be very surprised how little you might know. Dancing tango is fun when is not knowing what is next, but creating movement based on the message your partner sends.
The bigger circle of your knowledge, then your circle of unknown around you is even bigger. With your deep learning you will understand that you know nothing. Even after 2000 years... the hidden truth could be discovered...
Under the general name "Authentic Energy and Connections," we are teaching "Tango as a Relationship Therapist.” Some of it this philosophy people would learn at our group’s lessons, and mostly it will come to you in our private lessons.

WHERE to LOOK in TANGO EMBRACE
POSITION and MEANING of ladies head in the close or open position of Tango.
Some students often come back to our lessons after visiting other teaching and places. Recently, I asked one lady to explain to me why she keeps her head over her husband's right shoulder. She said that in such position her "neck is less tired".
The close or open position has nothing to do with the position of the follower’s head in the most cases. For some who learned about the history of the tango movements, it is obvious that everything that we dance has historical, psychological or sociological meaning. When you dance with a man, choose what to dance with him, think about the meaning of the steps.
1. Lady’s head is looking over the man's RIGHT shoulder. (Use ONLY when you both have almost the same heights). This position is NOT sign of the close embrace. It is NOT useable for short ladies with a TALL partner!
MEANING: a girl does not care about her partner, does not want to face him, have anything in common with him, does not want to be involved emotionally with this specific man; and might be looking for somebody
else behind him.
2. Ladies head is looking over the man's LEFT shoulder ("a window of the dreams").
Her chin is up, and parallel to the floor (but not DOWN; she should NOT look to the floor). This position is used for ANY partner's heights.
MEANING: friendly, polite welcome to communicate; I don't care about other men right now; I am with you to investigate 3 min of this music. This position saying: we could go together in one the same direction, as a union.
However, the position of the head is the personal choice of a
woman; as well as, the close or open embrace historically was and still IS HER personal choice. Tango is a very intimate dance, besides just “Fun” dance. It is NOT exercise with the music. If a woman does not want to be intimate with a partner (during these 3 min), she choose "open embrace," she choose the distance between her and her leader.
Men could not force her, he could not insist on tight hug with every “unknown” female. Tango was born not in a family business, but is the brothels. Women, who wanted to be hugged, danced in a close embrace. Some others, who wanted just experiment with the movements, and were waiting for somebody else, danced in the open embrace. Moreover, for some skilled dancers, the open - close embrace would be
changed all the time during the different movements. Some movements expect more close embrace and many others- should be dance in open embrace (when right arm and hand of the leader slides to the left side of the woman).
In any case, it is very the technical question, which should be well taught, or at least historically explained.

TIPS for LEADERS
SOME HINTS FOR LEADERS TO REMEMBER
To dance the Tango you need to feel the tango music in order to dance it well. You and your partner should dance as it as one body- soul. You need to learn how to move with elegance, but not just executing some step patterns.
- dance with a long leg extensions from the hips. Reach with a straight leg extended, but not with the bent knees.
- while stepping forward extend the legs from inside the thighs.
- take long steps from the hip, while stepping backward.
- don’t look at the floor all the time, and don’t stare at your partner. It is better to look towards the left for the next space to move to.
- while walking, place your body and step on the ball of your foot softly, do it more like an airplane lands, trying not to step with a heel first (as in a ballroom style).
- keep your body centered, from the waist line slightly forwards a partner.
- try to dance evenly like you are floating. Your partner should not feel when you landing your foot.
- left foot lands slightly pointing to the left. Right foot lands pointing right.
- try not to bounce up and down!
- never move your left arm & hand. Your right arm is the main connection. It is the main part of your Frame, and it controls the space where your partner dancing. Keep it pressed on her back.
LEADERS need to follow the traditional rules of the dance-hall and traditional Milonga etiquette of Buenos Aires.
- music will be presented in Tandas with Curtinas (3 sets with musical interludes)
- clear the floor between Tandas in order to maximize partner exchanging
- walk the lady back to her seat after the set. It is gentlemanly thing to do, plus, if you have done a good job she might be in a trance or a bit confused about where she is on the floor.
- use the Cabeceo or Eye Game to catch her for a dance (in 10 feet or 50 feet from her).
- use the Cabeceo while dancing to make promises for later Courteous Navigation:
- dance in 2 or 3 lanes starting at the outside of the hall
- dance into the corners, rather than cutting the off
- merge into traffic by catching the eye of the on-coming leader
- neither block traffic for long pauses nor race around cutting off the other dancers
- a collision requires BOTH leaders to exchange apologies, at least by making eye contact and nodding
Ladies! Your left hand never should grab man’s body to keep your balance.
Ladies should keep their feet under themselves and boleos low-to the floor.
OCHOS: take a long step by the right foot and around the right side of your partner,
twist your hip to the right, then return and place your left foot directly in front and center (AllRightsReserved©2006-10)

WOMEN DANCE on LEADERS SKILLS
A woman cannot make up a dance for a man, if he does not lead it. All women dream to dance with good, strong leaders, who would take them to "unknown" patterns, to some new heights, and to new achievements in tango adventure.
The better the leader is, the better his partner looks. It is obvious for everybody. This is why Leaders need to study tango with more persistence, and with more commitment. Leaders need to make a really strong effort to overcome their own personal attitude, that could be in the way of their success in tango life and leading, then over come their own old bad tango habits. They need to try to put more energy into some tango steps, according to the music strong beats.
They need to polish not only their techniques, but also their good manners and politeness and to learn more about the social skills and tango etiquette. Mostly, learn how to be pleasant and smiling to a partner before and between the sets of the dance. However, the main idea for a leader is to learn deeper that vast tango vocabulary, and practice what has been learned. Otherwise, it will disappear again. It means that every time after a new lesson, men need to practice dancing the new steps, new approaches, and new tango combination.
If men want to progress, they should not go to Milonga to dance only what was learned once some time ago. Women like to investigate tango steps with new partners. They like to try new things and new challenges.
Sometimes a leader could be a good and pleasant social dancer, but he has limited vocabulary, or just afraid to try new combination, and then women get bored with his dancing. Actually, if we talk about the techniques, there are no "man only" or "woman only" techniques. The Tango dance is skilled when a man and a woman exchange leads.
But they always use the same tango principles, the techniques are the same for both parts. Some figure might have a lot of ballroom in it, or a lot of show tricks, or it could be authentic style, but the principles of balance, extensions, stretching, and leads are the same.
Learn HOW to Dance, HOW to Lead!
Don't memorize the patterns! Every pattern cold be broken and could lead to something else. Every pattern has many "windows" where the real great dancer would take a lady for a great pleasure of discovery.

RULES for FOLLOWERS
In this present world of strong women, who lead their lives and control all emotional and business movements, it is a very challenging task left for men: to be a leader. Everybody said they should be stronger, smarter, faster, more energetic, and just more. But from their childhood men mostly were raised by mothers, taught by women-teachers, and accustomed to be obediently polite to their wives (not to upset them). Now in such situations some men are leaders, and some others are giving up…Most of them could get very good leading techniques from the tango lessons, but only IF women would learn HOW to be good followers.
The good answer for a happy tango relationship or for a happy marriage is in traditional role of the Tango leader. But, Ladies, let your partner be a MAN. Learn how to be a follower on the dance floor, and during the tango lessons. Most women consciously or authentically feel that they need leaders in their lives. They feel it, but still try to take too much burden on their shoulders, even in the dance. They are so accustomed to teach, to help, to talk, that they cannot stop doing it even during the perfectly good dance lessons with a good teacher, who also talks.
First: most women need to train themselves NOT TO TALK to a man during the lesson or practice. Learn how to listen. Make an effort to listen silently to the energy that he is trying to project in the frame of the embrace. If men give up tango would never happen. Tango asks for “mucho macho.” It is a man’s dance, but it is always about women.
However, it was and is about leading by men. FOLLOWERS: try to give your partner a chance to express himself. Give him a moment on the dance floor to do something on his own, let him make an initiative! It would please him tremendously! THEN, he would feel joy! And THEN he would make you happy!
RULES:
1. Listen to your partner intently
2. Don’t teach him anything even though you might think you know more
3. Don’t talk to him during the lesson or during your practice with him
4. Don’t try to help him by saying “HOW” he needs to do the step
5. Try to please him with everything during the practice, and support his effort to learn with you
6. Follow his lead even though it might be “wrong” or just his experiments
7. Be willing to go with your man where he leads you on the dance floor
8. Close your eyes, and read the energy inside the frame.
9. Learn the correct tango techniques (it is equal for both)
10. Listen to the music while moving with your partner
11. Don’t assume what is next
12. Learn patterns and be ready should the leader break them for his own interpretation
13. Don’t follow some "fashion" without thinking, and without adjusting the tango style to your own body/mind, and without understanding what each style means!
Every woman can dance only on the Leader’s skills.
